Gametrailers has posted a new interview with RT from GamesCom 2011. It's a broad interview but includes some good details and clarifications, centering around factions and PvP.

We also got answers to our 10 questions from thedarkplaces on Twitter:

What is the primary objective of the Phoenicians ?

We aren't quite sure, and this is what our group is trying to uncover. The Phoenicians are traders and merchants by heart and tradition, and they've been happy building their fortunes across the world, but we believe they're also sick and tired of being treated as the ugly duckling by the Big Three. They want to become a swan — figuratively speaking. Aside from that assumption, we know very little about them.

What EXACTLY happened the last time the voice of the Phoenicians wasn't heard?

We don't know exactly, but we do know that the Council of Venice was broken and disbanded in the late 1930s, as the world was on the cusp of
war. Sources say that the Phoenicians were thrown off the Council just before it broke apart, but there are absolutely no written records from that period — as far as we know. The truth has been buried.

Why are the Phoenicians barred from the battlefields of the Secret War?

Again, it has to do with what happened in the 1930s and early 40s. The Phoenicians may have made some bad choices, but that's just theory. The Council has kept no records from that time, and no one is willing to talk about it. Yet.

Who is really responsible for the intrusions into CoV servers ?

Look, if we knew that, we wouldn't be out there searching for the truth. You're asking a lot of the same questions that we're asking — we just don't have the answers. Rumours were circulating that it was the Phoenicians themselves, which obviously lead to the debacle inside the Council. We received those emails from a trusted source. We haven't heard anything more at this point, although we expect we will.

To what extent was the Council of Venice compromised during the last intrusion ?

No idea. Someone shut down their global network, we know that, and they lost their fibre and satellite links with the designated war zones and battlefields across the world, necessitating a shut-down of all activities — their so-called 'gentlemen's war'.

What are the exact goals of the Council of Venice ?

Officially? To keep the cabals in check, and to protect civilians from their activities. They're really serious about that bit; it's in their charter. I mean, the cabals themselves created the Council — primarily the Templars, Illuminati and the Phoenicians; you'll have a hard time getting the Dragon to make an official statement or decision on anything, and the other cabals are too small and fragmented to really make an impact, unless they band together. Which they never do. And the cabals first and foremost wanted someone to police the other cabals, to make sure that everyone played by the same rules. But as the Council became autonomous, it began to focus more and more on protecting the outside world from the secret world, collaborating with governments and corporations to ensure that any leaks or events were quickly covered up, and to create its own army of peacekeepers to actually go into troubled areas and take action.

What can we do in order to help the Council of Venice?

Awareness is the most important thing. The Council is, at heart, a positive force, but it's also influenced by the ambassadors on the Council — and that can be problematic.

Where can we find new information about the Council of Venice and the 4th?

You can't. At least not yet. We're digging, and we always need help. If we know we can trust you, we'll call on you.

In what ways is the Council of Venice deceiving us ?

I don't know if they are. That's what we trying to find out. The Council isn't, at least not intentionally, but the members of the Council are definitely into deception. It's what they do. It's what they've always done. So of course that rubs off.

    Who are you ?

I'm a friend! Okay, I know that's a loaded word, and I'm sorry for the confusion. MY name is Farah, but there are more of us. We're not one. We're many. Well — a bunch. I used to work in a coffee shop and study computer science. That's obviously no longer the case. I guess I'm an internet archaeologist at this point: I dig for the truth, I assemble the little pieces, and I try to find the patterns and the answers. Why? I'm not going to tell you that, it's personal. It's personal for all of us. And why are we so cryptic? Good question. Some of us are more cryptic than others; we deal in the unknown and unknowable, so it's easy to get carried away sometimes. Also, we have to be careful. We don't mess with you because we want to mess with you: we play it safe and we test. Sometimes we go too far, but hey. It comes with the job.

(And no, I don’t run the Twitter bit. We coordinate, but we split responsibilities. My responsibility right now is to answer questions for the group. I’m not good at testing anyone.)

The first phase of the Secret War is online. At the moment, phase one consists of a new personality test to help you choose a faction. Once you've completed or skipped the test, you choose your faction and sign up for the Secret World beta as well as phase two of the Secret War. As the Secret War makes heavy use of social networking, you must link to a Facebook account when you sign up. You can also check out the FAQ.

    From thesecretworld.com:
The first phase of The Secret War experience is now live. This first phase allows you to access a brand-new personality test that will let you find out what secret society you are most
suited to join, or you can simply choose one of the secret societies as you see fit.

    Check it out now!

After making your choice you get to register as a member of that secret society. This also functions as the official beta registration for The Secret World.

If you are an existing member of the community (e.g. you took the original initiation test or even left your e-mail in the newsletter sign-up) you have been automatically registered as
a beta candidate. As such it is not necessary for you to re-register through the first phase of The Secret War experience if you only want to be considered for beta.

However, even if you are already signed up, we still strongly encourage you to re-register through the first phase of The Secret War experience. Doing so will allow you to participate
in phase two, where you will get to expand the influence of your secret society through a web-based community game where you can unlock achievements, in-game rewards usable at launch,
and even guaranteed beta access. Re-registration for this is required due to the many social networking features included in phase two. We suggest registering with the same e-mail you
    registered with earlier.

You will be contacted via e-mail when the upcoming phase two of the experience starts.

To learn more about The Secret War experience and beta registration, check out the official FAQ.

So what's phase two all about?

One of our overall goals with The Secret War experience is to engage the community in the conflict between the three secret societies even before the launch of the actual game. We want
them to forge a relationship with their secret society of choice, not to mention other members of the community. We feel that having that level of involvement makes waiting for the
game all the more exciting for everyone in the community -- including us!

The second phase will introduce players to a web-based community game where they can perform various actions on a global map in order to expand the influence of their secret society
    and climb within their ranks.

One of the activities players get to do is recruit friends directly from Facebook. Friends who join the same secret society as you can become your agents, which in turn can be deployed
in countries on the global map. This will expand your secret society's influence in that country, and it will help you climb through the ranks of your society!

Players will also access unique content every week -- such as screenshots, artworks and articles containing information about the game -- that can be shared as 'propaganda' with your
friends, further expanding your secret society's influence and allowing you to climb through their ranks.

By progressing through the ranks of your secret society, you unlock exclusive in-game items such as weapons and clothing, unique achievements and -- if you reach the highest rank --
guaranteed beta access! There are also other exciting rewards and prizes available such as the chance to visit the Funcom studio and even get your name featured in the game world!

There are several other activites -- such as a community unloackable for each secret society -- but we've already said way too much.

Some significant updates today. Mithrilendil was selected to by the community's ambassador yesterday, and today he squared off with thedarkplaces on Twitter and faced four tests. You can get caught up on the current ARG at CryGaia:

We also got a look at a Phoenician uniform that would seem to suggest that in-game faction is preparing for a coming conflict.

Update on Secret War and Beta Sign-Ups: Delayed Until Further Notice!
Posted by Tarib on DDCG on 27 August 1211 PST:
Due to technical difficulties we have decided to postpone the first phase of the Secret War experience and the beta registration until further notice.

We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused those of you who had taken time to visit our website on August 26th to sign up for the beta and take part in the first phase of The Secret War. We will be working relentlessly to make sure the experience and the beta registration are up as soon as possible.

We appreciate your patience and understanding.

    Sincerely,
    Funcom

Following the complications surrounding the beginning of the secret war, the following was posted on Twitter by thedarkplaces (funcom_tsw):
Carthage stirs. The ships are on the move. The Council is compromised. The secret war just got a whole lot more complicated.
They are lying. The Council is already compromised.

    Broken Timer ...
As you have noticed (no doubt ... that one thread is growing faster than weed in a full moon night) there's an issue with the timer for the Secret War.

We are sorry for the hassle this causes. Our technicians, gathered from the ranks of all three secret societies, are working to fix the issue. We hope to have some update for you guys soon.

We'll post any new information in this thread. To keep it readable it will be closed for now so new information doesn't drown.

    Thank you for your patience!

The word is out! The Secret World will require a monthly subscription and will include an in-game store from which players can purchase convenience and character customization items via microtransactions.

The following was posted by Tarib, Funcom's Senior Community Manager, on DDCG:

During today's quarterly financial presentation Funcom presented the initial overview on the planned business model for The Secret World.

At the presentation we revealed that The Secret World will feature a traditional paid subscription model combined with micro-transactions through an in-game store. This information was provided as part of Funcom's financial forecast going forward, and no further details were given due to the fact that we are still working on finalizing the model.

We are very excited about introducing an in-game store already from launch. Being able to integrate the store into the actual design of the game pre-launch gives us opportunities you do not normally get when introducing a store after you have launched a game.

We will be revealing more information about the store at a later date, but what we can say for now is that it will focus mostly on convenience item and character customization items such as clothing - of which The Secret World will offer a ton of variety! As developers we are being very careful in making sure that items purchased through the store does not give players any unfair advantage against those who do not use the in-game store.

Character power in The Secret World will be determined by how well you play the game, not how much money you are willing to put into it. Funcom already has considerable experience with in-game stores such as these and we have previously implemented these systems without damaging game balance in our other games, and as such we are confident the same will be true for The Secret World.

We look forward to revealing more about the in-game store as we progress towards launch!

    Sincerely,
    Funcom

Following a number of posts by community members, most in support of the planned model, Waldgeist posted the following follow-up:

We will not ruin the games balance, by offering players pay-to-win items in the Item Shop for The Secret World. We have a lot of experience with these things and know what unbalances the games and what doesn't.

We want TSW to be as successful as possible and will not jeopardize that by introducing an item shop into the game, that goes against what our players want.

TSW is after all not a Free to Play game, that would need revenue from a traditional item store with pay-to-win items, to finance itself. It is a subscription based game and we will tailor the business model around this principle and the core idea that:

The best players will be those, that play the game
and not those, that have the biggest wallets.

    Cheers,
    Waldgeist

Okay, so here's my first attempt at anything with After Effects - the first alliance video for the Protean Union.

I also created a new logo for the union. It's based on a hexagon (honeycomb and bees) and includes the Metatron Cube (some aspects of which could represent cooperation between cabals), a sun logo (to fight against the darkness, actually an inverted sun logo), an iris-like symbol (could represent the combined efforts of the eight domains), all focused on a nine-pointed star (the nine precepts as well as the eight domains and the high council). The whole thing is textured as stone.

And here's the enlarged version of the new union logo:

I've posted some new TSW articles from around the web in the Blog section.

MMORPG - The Secret World: Release and Beta Cometh!
IGN - Gamescom: Huge Battles in The Secret World
GameInformer - MMO Meets Survival Horror In The Secret World

And here's the latest video. Gamespot interviews Ragnar at GamesCom.

And another Tournquist interview, this time with Gamoa.

And nvidia interviews RT as well.
No new info that I noticed, but he's still both conscious and passionate. Talks a little about graphics and atmosphere as well.

GamesCom kicked off today, and even though news of the release date and beta sign-up announcements leaked out a little early, we got a couple of videos out of the deal.

First off is the illustrious Nyte of CryGaia.net, with a brief walk through of The Secret World's public booth in Hall 6 at Gamescom 2011. Notice the updated Templar logo!

Next is the actual presentation at GamesCom by Ragnar Tournquist, including the already well-known announcement of beta sign-ups starting on August 26th and a planned TSW release in April 2012! (This is just the TSW portion, for the entire opening presentation with all the games, check out http://youtu.be/CH0vy8QYWkw/.

And finally, here is the 4th CGI trailer in all its tentacled glory!
